Building a form
Every question type, how to add content and pages between them, and where the theme and settings live.
Open Forms in the sidebar, click New form, give it a name. You land in the builder — the same editor as Docs, so if you can write a doc you can build a form.
Adding questions
Type / on an empty line and pick a question, or click the + that appears
beside a block.
| Question | What the respondent gets | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Short answer | One line of text | |
| Long answer | A paragraph | |
| Validated email address | Shown as a clickable address in the inbox | |
| Phone number | International phone field | Stored in a canonical format, whatever spacing they typed |
| Number | Numeric input | |
| Date / Time | Native pickers | |
| Checkbox | One yes/no box — or a multi-select group once you add options | |
| Dropdown | Pick one | Set the options and an optional default |
| Rating | 1–5 stars | |
| Switch | On/off toggle | Set the default position |
| File upload | Drag-and-drop or click to choose | One file, or up to five; optionally restrict to documents or images |
| Signature | Draw with mouse or finger | Saved as an image on the response |
Every question has a label and an optional description. Options, defaults and the like are set on the field itself — type a dropdown's options into the dropdown, flip the switch to choose its default.
Content between questions
Anything the editor can write: headings, paragraphs, lists, images, tables. Two blocks are specific to forms:
- YouTube — paste a video link; it plays inside the form.
- Map — paste a Google Maps link, the embed code from Maps' Share → Embed a map, or just type an address. Handy for "where to come for the interview".
Both resize like images: hover and drag the side handles.
Pages
Type /page to insert a page break. Everything after it becomes the next
step. Each page can be named — the name shows in the progress bar at the top
of the form. Required questions are checked page by page, so a respondent
can't move on with something missing.
Theme
The palette icon opens the theme panel: colours, font, corners, cover image and logo, with presets to start from and separate light and dark looks. The form updates as you change things; Save applies them.
Settings
The gear icon opens Settings:
- General — the form's name.
- Submissions — let respondents edit their response afterwards (and how many times), show a "Submit again" button, redirect to your own URL after submit, cap responses per person.
- Data retention — auto-delete responses after a date, or once they are older than a number of days.
Settings use explicit Save / Cancel: nothing changes on a live form until you press Save.
Preview
The Preview tab is the form exactly as respondents will see it. You can fill it in, walk the pages and even "upload" a file — nothing is stored, so it's safe to try anything.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a question required?
Click the small asterisk next to the question's label in the builder. Required questions block the Next and Submit buttons until answered.
Can I reorder questions?
Yes — drag the handle that appears at the left of a block, exactly as in a doc.
What happens to responses if I delete a question?
Existing responses keep the answers they already have; the question just stops being asked. Deleting the whole form moves it to the trash with its responses.
Can a respondent upload a large file?
Up to your plan's maximum file size — 500 MB on Free, 2 GB on Standard, 5 GB on Business and Enterprise. A "file upload" question can accept one file or up to five.
